How to Dress for a Job Interview



As with any formal wear, knowing how to tie a tie very important, but this of course is only one component. There is also the shirt, shoes, belt and other components that go into determining the kind of impression you will make when you arrive at your interview.  Therefore, suggestions for dressing for your next job interview are as follows:

  • Suit: A traditional two-piece dark blue or black  business suit is preferred for your job interview.
     
  • Shirt: A pressed white long-sleeved shirt should be worn.
     
  • Tie: Choose dark solid prints like black, dark blue or burgundy so as to not be distracting.
     
  • Frontpack: Your organizer frontpack should always match the color of your business suit; not your tie.
     
  • Belt: Your belt in most instances should match the color of your shoes.  This is a standard practice.
     
  • Shoes: Your shoes should be dark brown or black and preferably lace-up.  Make sure they are clean and polished.
     
  • Socks: Your socks should be a dark solid color.
     
  • Hair: Your hair should be short, well groomed and neat.
     
  • Facial Hair: Beards and mustaches should be shaved off, however if you must have facial hair make sure its trimmed, well groomed and looks neat.
     
  • Finger nails: Your fingernails should be trimmed and clean.
     
  • Fresh breath: Always brush your teeth and tongue before leaving out to your interview, then chew a piece of gum just before you arrive.
     
  • Perfume & Cologne: Perfumes and colognes should be kept to a minimum.  Keep in mind that certain man-made fragrances give some people allergic reactions.
     
  • Jewelry: Necklaces, body piercings and earrings should be removed, however, a wedding ring or a watch is fine.
     
  • Briefcase: Your briefcase should contain a pen and notepad so that you can jot down note at your interview.  You should also bring along your resume and a calculator.
